Why Travel Insurance Is One of the Best Investments You Can Make

A few years ago, I was all set for a cycling trip to Spain with a group of friends. Flights booked, bags mentally packed, tapas already on my mind. Then I got a text message. My daughter, who had always battled stage fright, had just been cast in a lead role of her middle school play. The performance? Right in the middle of my trip.

There was never really a decision to make. I cancelled my flights. And thanks to my cancel-for-any-reason travel insurance policy, I was able to recoup most of my costs. No drama other than the scripted one performed on stage.

I share this story because it’s a good reminder that the reasons we cancel trips aren’t always emergencies. Sometimes life just intervenes in the most unexpected ways.

Over the years at AdventureWomen we’ve seen our guests face all kinds of unforeseen circumstances that affected their travel plans. A sudden job loss. An unexpected injury or medical diagnosis. A family emergency that couldn’t wait. These aren’t rare worst-case scenarios — they’re real situations that happen to real people, often at the worst possible times.

We work hard to keep our trip policies as flexible as possible. But there are costs we simply can’t refund such as hotel reservations, train tickets, trail passes, and activity fees.

Common reasons guests have needed to cancel or adjust their trips

But trip insurance isn’t only about what happens before you leave. It also has your back once you’re on the road. Think about the things that can go sideways mid-trip: your checked bag takes an unplanned detour to a different continent, a delayed connection causes you to miss the next leg of your journey, or you wake up somewhere beautiful and feel absolutely terrible.

Say you come down with a bug halfway through your trip. Nothing serious, but enough that you’d rather spend one more day at the hotel resting than push on with the group. Suddenly you’re looking at an extra night’s lodging plus a taxi or car transfer to catch back up with everyone. Those unplanned costs add up fast, and a good travel insurance policy would cover most of them.
