Trip Overview

This captivating expedition offers a comprehensive glimpse into the wonders of Spitsbergen. This voyage is a quest to encounter the rich array of wildlife inhabiting this region, including walruses, reindeer, and the iconic polar bear, all within their natural habitat, while basking in the glow of continuous daylight. Immerse yourself in the distinct Arctic landscape, trek across the expansive and vibrant tundra, delve into the history and geology of this remote wilderness, and embark on a thrilling excursion to a distant, indelible land.

Exploring Spitsbergen

Arrive in Helsinki where you will spend your first night. The next day, transfer to Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen’s principal settlement and the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, which holds the title of the “wildlife capital of the Arctic”. From there, board your vessel and start your voyage through Spitsbergen, the secluded Norwegian island celebrated for its breathtaking panoramas and diverse wildlife. This adventure is offered on the Ocean Adventurer, a cherished vessel among passengers, renowned for its intimate ambiance fostering connections among guests and expedition team members.

Your expedition will traverse the western reaches of Spitsbergen and the awe-inspiring fjords to the north, unveiling a tapestry of polar flora and vast glaciers that mirror the diversity of the local fauna.

With each expedition comes a fresh array of possibilities, shaped by varying weather patterns and ice conditions, ensuring a flexible itinerary. Among the potential destinations lie the majestic 14th of July Glacier, the historic grounds of Smeerenburg, the imposing cliffs of Alkefjellet, and the picturesque Hinlopen Strait. Each stop is meticulously chosen to offer optimal wildlife sightings while honoring the rich history and geological wonders of Spitsbergen.

Amidst this Arctic expanse, opportunities abound for capturing wildlife through a photographic lens. Svalbard’s largely uninhabited and protected ecosystem makes it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, promising encounters with polar bears set against a backdrop of towering mountains and icebergs.

The sheer cliffs of Alkefjellet host colonies of Brünnich’s guillemots, offering a glimpse into their bustling communities. Witnessing a walrus haul-out is a memorable experience, where these massive pinnipeds congregate along coastal strips, inviting observation of their intimate gatherings.

For a more immersive perspective, indulge in sea kayaking or paddle excursion adventures, allowing for a up-close encounter with the island’s splendor from the water.

Spitsbergen natural allure knows no bounds, with vibrant tundra adorned by summer wildflowers, ever-changing vistas of icebergs, and encounters with polar bears in their natural habitat. Each day promises new wonders, whether it’s the remnants of bygone civilizations or the serene moments shared with nature’s magnificent inhabitants.

We encourage you to reach out if you are interested, as our fun active extras (sea kayaking, paddling) are very limited. While you will be traveling within the camaraderie of AdventureWomen small women-only group, other passengers of mixed genders will be traveling on the World Explorer.

Day 3

Exploring Spitsbergen

Spitsbergen is the largest and only permanently populated island of the Svalbard archipelago in Arctic Norway. Despite its harsh climate and remote location, Spitsbergen has a rich history of exploration, whaling, and coal mining.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • The itinerary provided each day is tentative and cannot be guaranteed. In remote regions, your Expedition Team must carefully consider sea, ice, and weather conditions when determining the route and itinerary details. The sites mentioned are examples of what you may encounter during your expedition, whether by ship, Zodiac cruise, or shore landing. Similarly, while wildlife encounters are anticipated, the presence of specific birds or marine species cannot be guaranteed.
  • During your expedition, you can participate in various activities to enrich your polar experience: Zodiac cruising, hiking (for a variety of skill levels to ensure every guest’s needs are met), daily polar experts chats and presentations, a polar plunge (scheduled only once per expedition), and photography opportunities (documenting your voyage with a guide who can help you hone your skills to capture the beauty of the polar region).
  • There are also 2 optional adventures: Sea Kayaking is a great way to intimately explore your surroundings. Prior kayaking experience is required, and you must be able to do a wet exit to participate. Paddling excursions are perfect for anyone with minimal or no kayaking experience. The number of opportunities for these is weather dependent (calm conditions necessary). Please note all paid activities require advanced booking. Additional fees apply. Contact your designated Trip Manager to secure your spot!

The Glacier offers opportunities for activities such as Zodiac cruises, bird watching, and even the chance to walk on the side of the glacier. The area is known for its impressive glacier front with regular calvings that attract birds like Kittiwakes and thick-billed murres (Brünnich’s guillemot) along with Atlantic Puffins.

Day 5

Exploring Spitsbergen

A possible sight visit today is Smeerenburg (also known as Blubber Town) where the whalers hunted mainly bowhead whales and other species for their oil. The oil was used primarily for lighting and lubrication purposes in Europe. It was a valuable commodity in the trade networks of the time. Smeerenburg is now a popular destination for historians, archaeologists, and tourists interested in exploring the history of Arctic exploration and the whaling industry. From the vessel, you can see the remains of the old whaling station, including the decaying wooden structures and equipment scattered across the desolate landscape, providing a glimpse into the harsh and challenging life of Arctic whalers centuries ago.

Encountering a walrus haul-out is an unforgettable experience. Witness the captivating gatherings of these massive pinnipeds as they come together on small coastal strips.

The towering cliffs of Alkefjellet provide homes to thousands of Brünnich’s guillemots (thick-billed murres). Every year, around 60,000 breeding pairs can be found at Alkefjellet, making it a spectacular sight for nature enthusiasts.

The Hinlopen Strait is a waterway situated between Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago, and Nordaustlandet, the second-largest island. Measuring approximately 93 miles (150 kilometers) and 6 to 38 miles (10 to 60 kilometers) wide, the strait is known for its challenging navigation due to thick pack ice. Despite its difficulty, Hinlopen Strait is a prime location for observing wildlife. Walrus colonies, seabirds, and marine mammals like narwhals and polar bears can be spotted here.

Day 7

Exploring Spitsbergen

Despite its harsh conditions, the Arctic tundra is home to a variety of wildlife species. Iconic animals such as polar bears, Arctic foxes, caribou, muskoxen, and various species of migratory birds inhabit the tundra. These animals have specialized adaptations to survive in the extreme conditions, including thick fur or feathers, insulation layers of fat, and seasonal migrations. The Arctic tundra is also known for its low-growing vegetation, including grasses, mosses, lichens, shrubs, and hardy flowering plants. Permafrost, a defining feature of the Arctic tundra, consists of soil, rock, and sediment that remains frozen year-round, with only the surface layer thawing during the summer months. Permafrost plays a crucial role in shaping the landscape and influencing plant growth, hydrology, and the stability of the terrain.

It is home to a diverse array of Arctic wildlife, including polar bears, Arctic foxes, Svalbard reindeer, and various species of seabirds. The nutrient-rich waters of the fjord support a rich ecosystem of marine life, including seals, whales, and seabirds. Enjoy opportunities for wildlife viewing, glacier exploration, hiking, and photography in one of the most remote and untouched regions of the world.
