Crafted for women ready for a challenge, our Dynamic trips feature regular activity on varied terrain with moderate elevation gains. These are perfect for those with hiking and outdoor experience and a sense of adventure.

On a Dynamic trip, you might:

  • Enjoy consecutive days of hiking/activities for up to 3-4 hours a day at low to moderate altitude
  • Encounter diverse terrain with uneven surfaces, gentle to moderate inclines, and natural obstacles such as a shallow creek crossing, and occasional rocky or root-covered paths 
  • Be comfortable and physically fit to cover an average distance of 5-8 miles on some days

Overview

Natural wonders and rich cultural heritage come together in spectacular fashion on this journey to the Azores. Begin by exploring the UNESCO World Heritage city of Angra do Heroísmo. Lace up your boots for scenic hikes along São Sebastião and Rocha de Chambre trails, then reward yourself with a soak in volcanic natural pools. Take in sweeping vistas from Serra do Cume and delve into the depths of volcanic lava tubes. Experience São Miguel Island’s raw beauty with a 4×4 tour and kayaking at Sete Cidades, followed by a serene hike along the Moinhos da Ribeira Funda trail. Unwind in steaming thermal waters and sip locally grown Gorreana tea. Wrap up with guided city tours, visits to an ethnographic museum, dairy farm, and botanical gardens, all capped off with a fun tree-top adventure.

Itinerary

Arrive in Terceira

After being picked up at the Terceira Airpot (TER) airport, check into your hotel then join your local guide for a walking tour of Angra do Heroísmo, the charming island capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rich in history and culture. The tour covers approximately 3 miles and lasts about 2 hours walking on mostly level terrain with cobblestones. In the evening, gather with your guide and fellow travelers for orientation followed by a festive welcome dinner.

Hike the Lagoinha Trail

Your hike today begins at a viewpoint overlooking the island’s western coastline. The climb is steady, leading you to Lagoinha, a stunning volcanic lake perched at 2,400 feet above sea level. You’ll then return to the hotel to relax or explore charming Angra do Heroísmo, with lunch on your own. The afternoon highlight is a visit to the home of a local family, where you’ll be welcomed into their kitchen to learn about the local ingredients used in preparing Alcatra, a traditional Azorean beef stew

Today’s hike covers 6 miles/about 3 hours with a total elevation gain of 1,900 feet and a loss of 1,600 feet.

Rocha do Chambre Trail and Vineyard Visit

After breakfast at the hotel, board your private bus for a brief drive to Rocha do Chambre for a challenging hike with stunning views of Guilherme Moniz. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, savoring regional cuisine and Azorean hospitality. Cool off with a swim in Biscoitos’ natural ocean pools. Visit Materramenta winery to learn about Terceira’s winemaking traditions and taste local wines. Spend the evening on your own exploring Angra do Heroísmo or relaxing at the hotel, dining at a restaurant of your choice

Today’s hike covers 5.5 miles/about 2.5 to 3 hours, with a total elevation gain of 900 feet and a loss of 800 feet.

Volcanic Lava Tube, Azores

Fly to Sao Miguel Island

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and check out by 11:00 AM. The morning is at leisure before meeting your guide for lunch. After lunch, board your private bus for a scenic drive to the airport, exploring an empty volcanic lava tube and visiting the Serra do Cume viewpoint. Check in for your flight to Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island. Upon arrival, collect your luggage and transfer to your hotel, where a light buffet awaits before you settle in for the night.

Ponta Delgada City Tour

After breakfast, join your local expert for a guided walking tour of Ponta Delgada, exploring its rich history and architecture. Stroll through the historical town center and scenic seafront, enjoying views of the Atlantic. After lunch at a local restaurant, drive to Capelas to visit the Oficina Museu, an ethnographic museum curated by a retired couple. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon to unwind at the pools and spa. End the day with dinner at a local restaurant.

Sete Cidades Adventure

After breakfast, depart in 4×4 vehicles for an off-road journey to Sete Cidades. The 40-minute drive offers views of the Atlantic Ocean and the “Twin Lakes.” Explore the village of Sete Cidades, visit the local church, or walk along the lake’s edge. Enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by lush greenery. After lunch, try biking, SUP, or kayaking on the crater lakes, or relax by the water. Return to Ponta Delgada in the late afternoon, with dinner at your leisure.

Scenic Views and a Coastal Hike

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and check out. Board the bus for a morning of exploration, starting with a 30-minute drive to Pico da Barrosa for panoramic views of Lagoa do Fogo. Continue to São Brás to visit the Gorreana Tea Plantation, learning about tea-making, strolling through the fields. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic viewpoint. After lunch, hike the coastal trail at Moinhos da Ribeira Funda, ending at Praia da Viola. Arrive at your hotel in Furnas for dinner and a relaxing dip in the thermal pools.

Today’s hike covers 5 miles/approximately 3 hours, with a total elevation gain of 500 ft. and a loss of 1,480 ft.

Dairy Farm Visit, CIAF-Furnas Lagoon Monitoring Center, Fumaroles, Botanical Gardens

After breakfast, visit a family-run dairy farm to learn about their lactose-free milk and unique cheese. Head to Furnas Lagoon to explore the Monitoring and Environmental Interpretation Centre (CIAF) and see important conservation efforts. Stop at the fumaroles to witness your Cozido lunch being lifted from underground. The Cozido is a hearty slowcooked (6 hours!) stew made underground using volcanic heat Enjoy this hearty stew back at the hotel. After lunch, visit the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden with an expert guide. Enjoy free time to explore or relax in the thermal pool. Dinner is at your leisure.

Salto da Farinha Trail and Tree Top Adventure

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before departing for your final hike. Drive 30 minutes to the Salto da Farinha trail, walking through lush forests and past waterfalls. End at a stunning viewpoint and enjoy a picnic lunch. Return to Furnas Lagoon for an optional Tree Top Adventure featuring climbing walls, zip lines, Tibetan bridges, and other forest obstacles or explore Furnas village and soak in the thermal pools. Gather for a festive farewell dinner with your AdventureWomen friends, celebrating the conclusion of an amazing journey.

Today’s hiking covers 2.7 miles/about 2 hours with a total elevation loss of 1300 ft. and a gain of 700 ft.

Absolutely! We happily welcome all women as long as you are physically capable of doing the activities on your chosen trip. Our guests range from 18-85+! It is important to us to talk to each guest to make sure each woman chooses the right trip for her physical ability and interest.

You can process your registration on our online booking system or over the phone. Most deposits are $800. In many cases, and unless otherwise indicated, your deposit is transferable if you notify us in writing 120 before your trip departs.

Be sure to check the ‘What’s Included’ section of the trip you are interested in. Once you get to the departure city and meet the group, we often include most meals, all accommodations, all activities (although there might be an optional activity at an additional cost), transportation while on the adventure, qualified local guide(s) and some trips also include an AdventureWomen Ambassador. Our trips do not include airfare to/from the arrival and departure cities. However, internal flights are included in some itineraries so please read the itinerary carefully.

Absolutely! In fact, we encourage it! Many of the women who travel with AdventureWomen come solo. For those that do not choose a single supplement, we pair you with a roommate. Usually, when we change accommodations on a trip, we will change roommates if we can, so you get a chance to know others in our group. A limited number of single supplements may be available for an additional charge.

That depends entirely on the trip! AdventureWomen adventure travel trips are rated according to the physical fitness level demanded by the included activities.

  • Moderate: These adventures exercise your mind more than your body and are designed for women who prefer a leisurely, less rigorous experience. For example, you could walk up to 2 miles per day through cities and villages, stand in museums for a few hours, relax on a boat, or view wildlife from a vehicle.
  • Active: Adventures that get you on your feet! You should be in good physical condition where you are comfortable walking on uneven surfaces, such as cobblestone streets, biking manicured nature trails or kayaking calm waters.
  • High Energy: These adventures are designed for women who enjoy a physical challenge and crave being on the go! You should be prepared for itineraries that include (but are not limited to): a full day of biking on a rolling terrain, hiking 5-8 miles on moderate to steep trails, being active at high altitudes, whitewater rafting, or skiing.
  • Challenging: Adventures that get your heart rate pumping, these are demanding yet deeply rewarding and designed for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts. You should be in excellent physical condition, and be able to hike up to 10 miles, in steeper, more rugged terrain.
