Spices, Sapphires & Elephants Await Women on New Expedition to Sunday Times’ Destination of the Year: Sri Lanka
BOZEMAN, MT — Named London’s Sunday Times’ Destination of the Year in September, Sri Lanka, a tropical Indian Ocean island rich with history and once a part of the ancient Spice Trail, is an up-and-coming, yet little traveled to country. AdventureWomen, which specializes in group adventures for women 30 and older traveling solo, will embark on a 13-day Sri Lanka expedition to this “pearl of the Indian Ocean” on July 30, 2016.
“I think women will be surprised by the lush beauty of Sri Lanka, which has become synonymous with spices, sapphires and elephants,” says Susan Eckert, founder and owner of AdventureWomen. “It’s filled with dazzling beaches, gorgeous landscapes covered with tea plantations and a vast diversity of wildlife. We’re giving women an opportunity to discover the exotic highlights of Sri Lanka before everyone else does.”
The expedition will explore many of the island’s natural and historical sites, including the Dambulla Rock Cave and the rock fortress of Sigiriya (one of the island’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites), which is filled with frescoes. Women will visit Polonnaruwa known for its Hindu and Buddhist archaeology and lakeside town Kandy, whose Temple of the Tooth is said to hold a tooth of Buddha.
At the remote jungle village of Dambana, women will interact with the “Veddas,” or forest dwellers, the island’s indigenous inhabitants who are direct descendants of the Neolithic community dating back to 16,000 B.C. A train will take travelers on a scenic journey through tea plantations with an opportunity to sample tea with a tea sommelier.
During a stop at two of the country’s National Parks, women will embark on a wildlife safari to see the largest density of wild leopards in the world, as well as herds of elephant and the black-necked stork. They will also witness a natural event called “the Gathering,” which takes place August through October, showcasing the largest seasonally recurring concentration of wild elephants anywhere.
The cost of the Sri Lanka adventure tour is $5595 per person (from Colombo, Sri Lanka) and runs July 30-August 12, 2016. For more information or to reserve a spot on the Sri Lanka trip for women, please visit www.AdventureWomen.com.
